The Painting Project is a painting studio and classroom dedicated to the teaching of art classes and art lessons in Boulder CO. Our focus is on the classical and modern traditions of drawing and oil painting. It is committed to the enduring power of painting as a depth human activity which affords an indispensable exploration of ways of being.
The courses are geared for beginners, as well as advanced painters, and range from representational painting to complete abstraction. The curriculum provides a foundation in the fundamental techniques of oil painting. The Foundations course provides this instruction while working from still life, while the Figure/Figuration! course provides technical skill development in relation to the human figure. More advanced means of intuitive exploration are provided, both abstractly in the Abstraction as Discovery courses, as well as representationally in the Painting Through Modern Masters course. Further guidance is given in how to strengthen and fine-tune a painting through the Composition 102 course. Advanced painters meet on a monthly basis for the Group Crit, participating in conversation and community to help further individual directions and perspectives. In addition to the ongoing, hands-on, studio work, an art historical and theoretical context is provided through The Reading Group, a friendly and stimulating gathering of painters and non-painters, interested in engaging with various readings related to art history, the tradition of painting, and contemporary culture.
Instruction at The Painting Project is geared to giving every artist the skills they need to create the paintings they find most fulfilling. Participants will develop mastery in the foundational skills of drawing – measuring, geometry and proportion, as well as a thorough understanding of color, value and tonality. Oil paint as a physical material becomes familiar and accessible and exciting. In addition to fundamental skill development, the curriculum at The Painting Project strengthens individual artistic exploration and direction. For those interested, oil painting becomes a vehicle for deep and personal experimentation and self-discovery. Participants will learn of the great painters of the past and present, finding their own affinities and “family”, helping to strengthen their own directions and interests.
Studying at The Painting Project studio is an opportunity to become familiar with and immersed in the rich and vital world of oil painting. In addition the studio work, artists meet each other in a community of fruitful exchange of technique, ideas and friendship. The studio is also the artistic home of the main instructor, Jordan Wolfson. The space is charged with his own personal painting and work. While pursuing their own development, participants are exposed to the ongoing artistic development of a highly skilled, professional artist, committed to artistic exploration, risk and experimentation. All contribute together, creating an atmosphere of genuine engagement and supportive creative pursuit.
The instructor, Jordan Wolfson, has been teaching painting and drawing for over twenty years. Originally from Los Angeles, Jordan is a contemporary artist who has exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. Jordan received his MFA from Yale University and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant and a purchase award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In addition to technical expertise, Jordan provides students with the care and experience needed to navigate the challenging territory of deep artistic exploration. The Painting Project is a manifestation of Jordan’s vision for the present day nurturance of painting as an activity that matters.
